The MeDOL framework is the review's organizing scheme, adapting Morrison et al.'s instructional effectiveness model to the diversity of LTA research. It codes each study on four components: Methods (how dialogue is framed and fostered), Dialogue goals (epistemic goals participants pursue), Outcomes (LTA gains), and Learners (age/grade, learning structure, disciplinary field). The authors state: "Our MeDOL framework adapts Morrison et al.'s( 2019) effectiveness components as follows: Methods refer to the authors ' approach of framing educationally effective dialogue, and to the fostering methods used to increase LTA outcomes". Eleven coding categories emerged from applying it to 143 studies.
