Description¶
The NTFD extends the CTD by adding parents and non-twin siblings, allowing assortative mating to be modelled directly (via phenotypic assortment or social homogamy), non-additive genetic influences and shared environment to be estimated simultaneously, and the shared environment to be decomposed into sibling-shared (S), parental transmission (P), and twin-specific (T) components. The article states that "Including additional relative classes in the NTFD enables several of the assumptions in the CTD to be relaxed and more parameters to be estimated." It is used to quantify bias in CTD ACE estimates of educational attainment.
Accounts¶
- Nuclear Twin and Family Design (NTFD) as a framework for relaxing Classical Twin Design assumptions: The NTFD extends the CTD by adding parents and non-twin siblings, allowing assortative mating to be modelled directly (via phenotypic assortment or social homogamy), non-additive genetic influences and shared environment to be estimated simultaneously, and the shared environment to be decomposed into sibling-shared (S), parental transmission (P), and twin-specific (T) components. The article states that "Including additional relative classes in the NTFD enables several of the assumptions in the CTD to be relaxed and more parameters to be estimated." It is used to quantify bias in CTD ACE estimates of educational attainment. (Wolfram et al. (2023))
Claims¶
- The best-fitting NTFD model estimates heritability of educational attainment at 51% and total shared environmental influence at 26%, disaggregated into twin-specific (16%) and sibling-shared (10%) components [+M]
- Twin-specific shared environments account for a substantial portion of CTD shared-environment estimates for educational attainment and cannot be interpreted as between-family environmental differences [+M]
- Under phenotypic assortment NTFD models, parental education shows no environmental effect on offspring educational attainment once genetic influences are accounted for [+W]
- Dizygotic twin correlations for educational attainment are consistently higher than non-twin sibling correlations across countries, suggesting twin-specific shared environments are a general phenomenon [+W]
