The article organises the reasons for creating an OLM into a set of purposes that form the columns of the SMILI☺ tables and the third core question of the revised framework. Purposes include improving learner model accuracy, supporting metacognitive processes of planning, monitoring and reflection, facilitating collaboration or competition, facilitating navigation, respecting the learner's right to access and control their personal data, and using the learner model as an assessment of the learner. The revised version adds three new purposes: facilitating communication with interface agents, promoting positive affective states, and presenting data aggregated from multiple sources.
