Description

The SAGE taxonomy is a data-driven framework of four distinct recipience processes that feedback interventions target: Self-appraisal (making judgments about oneself, one's traits, or one's behavior), Assessment literacy (understanding the grading process and applying it to make academic judgments), Goal-setting and self-regulation (articulating desired outcomes and monitoring progress), and Engagement and motivation (being enthusiastic about and open to receiving performance information). It was generated by coding the stated or implied rationales of 105 intervention papers. The authors report the processes are empirically distinct: "the correlations for all pairs of SAGE processes were either negative, or only very weakly positive (r's ranged from -.43 to .12)".
