Description¶
The review develops a six-category typology of how deeply EER articles integrate theory, classifying each of the 24 included articles along four dimensions: didactic considerations, implementation of a specific EER, theoretical foundation connected with didactic considerations, and empirical verification of the theoretical foundation. The patterns range from "general statements on theoretical grounding in EERs without connection to didactic considerations" through loose connections, combined theoretical-didactic treatments without a specific EER or without empirical validation, up to "theoretical grounding with empirical validation". Each pattern is labeled with the dominant category of its articles.
Accounts¶
- Six patterns of theoretical integration in EER research, from general statements to empirical validation: The review develops a six-category typology of how deeply EER articles integrate theory, classifying each of the 24 included articles along four dimensions: didactic considerations, implementation of a specific EER, theoretical foundation connected with didactic considerations, and empirical verification of the theoretical foundation. (Vorderobermeier et al. (2024))
Claims¶
- Only a small minority of EER research articles explicitly link educational theory to the EER method [+W]
- Only four included articles achieved theoretical grounding with empirical validation [+W]
- Twenty-four EER articles use nine theoretical foundations, with experiential learning and collaborative learning most represented [+W]
