Description¶
The review organizes variation in engagement measurement around assumptions about temporality: engagement can be treated as a momentary, transient state of immersion in an activity, assessed by observations and experience sampling, or as a relatively stable tendency to behave in certain ways, assessed by questionnaires about typical behavior. It concludes that "the variations in the observational schedules, such as duration and number of observations in measuring child engagement, reflect a variety in the conceptualizations of child engagement on a state-trait continuum." This axis explains why observation schedules differ so widely across studies.
Accounts¶
- State–trait temporality as an organizing axis of child engagement conceptualization and measurement in ECEC: The review organizes variation in engagement measurement around assumptions about temporality: engagement can be treated as a momentary, transient state of immersion in an activity, assessed by observations and experience sampling, or as a relatively stable tendency to behave in certain ways, assessed by questionnaires about typical behavior.
