Description

TACT organizes ESL tutoring as a pedagogical decision space connecting learner-state annotation, tutor-strategy selection, and next-turn response generation. The student-move taxonomy records the learner's latest turn along two dimensions, move type and move status, where only Answer/Attempt moves can be Adequate or Problematic and other types are Non-evaluable. The tutor-strategy taxonomy "contains 13 strategies representing the intended pedagogical function of the next tutor turn", spanning prompting, backchanneling, affective feedback, verification, error flagging, hinting, guided revision, and direct correction. The mapping from student moves to strategies is conditional rather than deterministic, depending on proficiency, task difficulty, dialogue history, and prior support. Annotation reliability reached kappa of 0.708 for tutor strategy, 0.722 for move type, and 1.000 for move status.
