Description¶
The framework defines strategies as "students’ conscious and controllable sequences of actions to facilitate and enhance task performance", making them measurable from log data. A hierarchical task model maps logged, time-stamped actions to three primary cognitive processes: Information Acquisition, Solution Construction, and Solution Assessment. Coherence Analysis plus sequence mining identify common action sequences interpreted as strategies, and differential sequence mining compares their use across performance groups. The authors state the framework generalizes prior Betty's Brain work and is applicable to other open-ended tasks that employ similar cognitive processes.
Accounts¶
- Task-oriented strategy framework for OELEs: strategies as conscious, controllable action sequences mapped to IA, SC, and SA cognitive processes: The framework defines strategies as "students’ conscious and controllable sequences of actions to facilitate and enhance task performance", making them measurable from log data. Claims¶
- Sixth-grade students using CTSiM showed significant pre-to-post gains on acceleration, diffusion, and CT tests, with moderate effect sizes for acceleration (0.43) and CT (0.57) and a large effect size for diffusion (0.9) [+M]
- Students' frequently-used strategies changed from the acceleration unit to the diffusion unit, showing strategy evolution across model-building tasks [+M]
