Description¶
Because think-aloud protocols face reactivity and veridicality risks, the review recommends that researchers "view think-aloud data as indicators of only a part of self-regulated reading process rather than a full picture of it". One or more other data sources — pre- and post-interviews, questionnaires, observations, on-line computer logs, and eye-movement registration — should be combined with think-aloud reports for a fuller picture. The review also recommends reporting details such as languages used for reading and verbalizing and participant ages.
Accounts¶
- Treat think-aloud data as indicators of only part of the self-regulated reading process and triangulate with other data sources: Because think-aloud protocols face reactivity and veridicality risks, the review recommends that researchers "view think-aloud data as indicators of only a part of self-regulated reading process rather than a full picture of it". One or more other data sources — pre- and post-interviews, questionnaires, observations, on-line computer logs, and eye-movement registration — should be combined with think-aloud reports for a fuller picture. The review also recommends reporting details such as languages used for reading and verbalizing and participant ages. (Hu et al. (2017))
Claims¶
- Think-aloud reports are incomplete and sometimes nonveridical, particularly for metacognitive processes [+M]
- Think-aloud reactivity effects on reading outcomes are inconclusive, moderated by report type, task language, and participant age [+M]
