Description¶
StudentSim overcomes sparse per-student data with a two-stage pipeline. Stage 1 trains one domain-specific base simulator on records pooled across all students, learning "common mistake patterns, the response format expected in the domain, and the pathway from natural-language tutor guidance to a changed response". Stage 2 initializes from that base and adapts it to one specific student using only that student's own recorded responses and tutor-guidance interactions, producing one LoRA adapter per student on a shared Qwen3-4B-Instruct backbone.
Accounts¶
- Two-stage pooled-then-specialized training: pretrain a domain base simulator on pooled student data, then specialize one adapter per student: StudentSim overcomes sparse per-student data with a two-stage pipeline. Claims¶
- Across chess, L2 writing, and math, trained StudentSim simulators outperform every reference baseline on behavioral fidelity (F) [+M]
- Across all three domains, trained StudentSim simulators outperform every baseline on guidance responsiveness (R), with the largest gap on open-ended guidance modes [+M]
- A 4B per-student simulator solves a held-out Socratic-guidance chess case where prompted GPT-5.4 fails, indicating multi-turn training adds guidance-following capability beyond hint copying [+W]
