Description

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards proposes five core propositions that provide a vision for accomplished teaching and form the basis for National Board Certification:

  1. Accomplished teachers are committed to their students and their learning. They recognize individual differences and adjust their teaching to their students' needs, understand how students develop and learn while recognizing that their mission goes beyond cognitive development alone, and treat students equitably.
  2. Accomplished teachers know their subject and know how to teach it. They understand how knowledge in their subject is created, organized, and linked to other subjects, and know how to convey it using multiple paths to knowledge.
  3. Accomplished teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. They use multiple methods to meet instructional goals and support learning across settings, engage students in the learning process, value student participation, and regularly assess progress.
  4. Accomplished teachers think systematically about their teaching and learn from experience. They use feedback and research to improve their practice and make difficult choices that test their professional judgment.
  5. Accomplished teachers are members of learning communities. They collaborate with other professionals, families, and the community.

Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Institutional structures (time, mentoring, feedback mechanisms) that let a teacher act on propositions 3–5, which depend on more than individual skill — monitoring practices, opportunities for reflection, and access to a professional community

Constraints

  • The propositions describe a target state for accomplished practice; they do not by themselves specify how to get an individual teacher from an earlier developmental stage to this level (see Fuller's Concerns Theory for the developmental path most teachers actually travel)

Target Learners

  • Teachers preparing for or pursuing National Board Certification, and teacher preparation programs using the propositions as a target framework

Target Learning Objectives

  • Equitable, well-monitored student learning grounded in genuine subject and pedagogical expertise, sustained by ongoing reflection and professional collaboration
