Description

The article presents an Aligned Generative AI Course Policy as a design framework in which "the allowed and unallowed uses of GenAI tools are described in a transparent manner for students." Rather than a blanket course-wide rule, the framework aligns each GenAI permission decision with what the instructor actually assesses for each student task. It works by decomposing the course into its constituent student tasks, classifying each as assessed or as an intermediate step, and matching each task to a GenAI workforce competency before deciding whether assessment or competency-building takes priority.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • The instructor must analyze student tasks by creating an inventory of each step a student would take that leads to a finished product of their learning

Constraints

  • The framework is presented as a design case describing one course policy design, not as a tested intervention

Target Learners

  • higher education students in courses with GenAI tools available

Learning Goals

  • transparent and equitable use of generative AI tools in coursework
  • emerging GenAI workforce competencies
