Argumentation-based group activity pattern for teaching a mathematics unit¶
Design · All designs
Evidence · 3 claims (3 for) · 1 study (1 causal),q2· 0 of 1 report an effect size · 3 claims rest on one study
Description¶
The pattern organizes a mathematics unit as repeated small-group argumentation activities: the class is divided into small groups that work through researcher-prepared activities, defend claims in group discussion, and share defended claims with the whole class. As printed, "the experiment group was divided into seven groups totally as 6 groups of four each and 1 group of six each and they dealt with the activities prepared by argumentation method throughout the function subject and did 9 activities totally during the practice". Students who doubted a claim tried to confute it by raising a new claim, with constant teacher interaction.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities prepared in advance for argumentation
- small groups of about four to six students
- classroom time for discussion and whole-class sharing of claims
Constraints¶
- The article states "This study is limited to 9th-grade students and "Functions" subject" and notes generalization would require larger samples
Target Learners¶
- 9th-grade high school mathematics students
Learning Goals¶
- science process skills
- attitude toward mathematics
- conceptual understanding of functions
- willingness for argumentation
Claims¶
- Argumentation Improves Science Process Skills Functions [+M]
- Argumentation Improves Maths Attitude Functions [+M]
- Argumentation Increases Willingness For Argumentation [+M]
