Contrasting cases with a synthesis (inventing principles) task to develop perceptual differentiation of discussion features¶

Description¶
The instructional approach uses "juxtaposed examples that are chosen to highlight distinctive features or relationships", with most features held constant so key differences stand out. Learners synthesize across multiple cases by inventing guiding principles, in line with Schwartz and Martin's (2004) approach, so that differentiation of stimuli and of principles reinforce each other and support transfer. The activity prepares learners for an expert recap, creating "a time-for-telling".
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Cases must be carefully chosen so pairwise comparisons isolate particular features; a synthesis task across the cases; a subsequent expert discussion and lecture to consolidate what was noticed
Constraints¶
- The authors used constructed transcripts rather than video because natural classroom variability makes tight video contrasts challenging; chosen features are a subset known to be important, not exhaustive
Target Learners¶
- preservice teachers
- undergraduate prospective teachers
Learning Goals¶
- differentiating features of productive discussion
- developing guiding principles for discussion
- noticing present and absent discussion features
Claims¶
- Blair2024 Noticing Time Subject Focus Interaction [+M]
- Blair2024 Student Focused Increase Teacher Flat [+M]
- Comparing cases side by side improves learning and transfer by a moderate average amount, though in one algebra study it raised procedural knowledge and flexibility but not conceptual knowledge [+M]
Related Designs¶
- Three forms of noticing required for learning to facilitate productive discussion — the framing the intervention was designed around
