Description

The CPDL treatment combined BNCweb corpus consultation with PP-based cognitive explanations. BNCweb is described as "a web -based client program used for searching and retrie ving lexical, grammatical and textual data from the British National Corpus (BNC), which contains a 100 -million-word rich variety of annotated texts". Students received a three-hour DDL training session a week before instruction, then generated and interpreted concordance lines of the target prepositions, matching discovered senses to the PP polysemy networks. The control group instead used only print or electronic dictionaries on the same fill-in-the-blank materials.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A prior training session familiarizing students with corpus query techniques and concordance interpretation
  • A technology-enhanced room with projector, wireless connectivity and high-speed internet

Constraints

  • The article notes DDL by itself may not suffice for teaching preposition senses, since corpus collocates alone do not explain the motivated semantic network

Target Learners

  • second-year Turkish university students of English

Learning Goals

  • learning the distinct senses and uses of the vertical prepositions over, above, under and below
