Description¶
The cascade model is a tiered training structure in which "the participants are both the subjects and agents of change" (Gilpin, 1997, as cited). Phonics experts train a group of well-performed EFL teachers as provincial-level trainers, who then train local trainers at county level, so training benefit cascades downward to ordinary EFL teachers. The article presents it as a means of saving time, reducing cost and producing more EFL teachers, enabling local departments to conduct training independently.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- A group of well-performed EFL teachers with an English diploma must be recruited and assessed (oral test, written test, trial teaching, descriptive assessment) before serving as trainers
Constraints¶
- The article notes cascade training raises a sustainability-or-dilution concern via Gilpin (1997), and implementation faced resistance from principals and heavy teacher workloads
Target Learners¶
- In-service rural primary EFL teachers (Zhuangang teachers)
Learning Goals¶
- English pronunciation and phonics knowledge
- English teaching skills and training skills
