Description¶
The article describes CBI as an instructional strategy with two components: "narratives covering real-world situations for individual knowledge construction (self-regulation) and collaborative discussions offering students to work together to solve the problem (co-regulation)." In the studied course, students first completed individual case analyses responding to prompts about stakeholders, challenges, and solutions, then participated in two-week instructor-facilitated and student-led case discussions, first identifying the problem and then providing solutions. This sequencing moves learners from individual understanding to shared collaborative knowledge construction.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Authentic cases presenting real-world professional problems; discussion structures that require co-analysis, teamwork, and peer feedback
Constraints¶
- Some students find CBI challenging due to negative attitudes, personal conflicts, or perceived irrelevance, resulting in lack of engagement
Target Learners¶
- online graduate students in instructional design
Target Goals¶
- ill-structured problem solving
- self- and co-regulated metacognition
- collaborative knowledge construction
Claims¶
- Cognitive Presence Highest Least Variable Online Cbi [+M]
- Self Co Regulation Highly Correlated Online Cbi [+M]
