Description¶
The review's moderator analyses ground a design principle: efficacy in healthy older adults "is to a large extent determined by design choices." Group-based delivery (g = 0.29) and 1–3 weekly sessions were effective, while home-based delivery and more than three sessions per week were ineffective, and sessions shorter than 30 min showed only weak evidence of efficacy. The authors conclude that "Consistently ineffective design choices should therefore be avoided."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Group-based delivery with a trainer present to support adherence, fidelity, and motivation, as the article describes group-based practice variables
Constraints¶
- Evidence limited to healthy older adults without dementia or MCI; durability of gains not addressed
- Sessions shorter than 30 min show only weak evidence of efficacy
Target Learners¶
- cognitively healthy older adults (mean age 60+)
Learning Goals¶
- improving cognitive performance, particularly processing speed, nonverbal memory, working memory, and visuospatial skills
Claims¶
- Cct Group Based Effective Home Based Not [+M]
- Cct Frequency Above Three Sessions Ineffective [+M]
- Cct Small Significant Overall Effect Healthy Older Adults [+M]
