Description

The CoBl model combines traditional face-to-face learning with online instruction on a Moodle LMS, using collaborative learning activities to develop thinking ability. The article states "The proportion of online learning and face to face learning is approximately 50 percent." It has four components (principles, objectives, procedures and instructional activities, measurement and evaluation) and three instructional phases: pre-instruction, instruction with nine steps integrating collaborative and thinking-ability activities, and evaluation. Students work in small groups of 4-6 using chat room, web board, and e-mail tools.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Instructors and learners need to understand the process of teaching and learning and participate in group activities and online discussion via chat and LMS
  • Adequate resources such as software, computer laboratory, presentation equipment, and internet network must be allocated
  • Cooperation from stakeholders such as administrators and teachers

Constraints

  • The between-group thinking-ability benefit was not demonstrated in a 14-week implementation with physical education undergraduates
  • Experts recommended the model for this higher-education physical education context

Target Learners

  • undergraduate physical education students

Learning Goals

  • learning achievement
  • thinking ability (organizing, applying, analyzing, knowledge generating, integrating, evaluating)
