Description¶
Across three case studies targeting different workforce segments, the report identifies shared design features: "Local early educator pipelines and pathways," relationship-building among students, instructors, and staff; "Opportunities for clinical practice in feedback-rich environments"; multifaceted student supports; well-supported and diverse staffs of instructors, advisors, and coaches; and community partnerships and funding to strengthen preparation. The report suggests these features may be developed locally and supported at the state level.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Dedicated staff who understand their local context, plus partnerships and funding that provide financial supports, student teaching opportunities, and classroom space
Constraints¶
- The features were observed in three California case study programs and New Jersey's state-level example; the report presents them as promising rather than proven at scale
Target Learners¶
- Diverse current and future early educators of children birth to age 5
Learning Goals¶
- Effective early childhood teaching practice, credential and degree attainment, and persistence through preparation
Claims¶
- Early educators face financial, academic, and structural barriers to college enrollment and degree completion, disproportionately affecting students of color [~M] — the barriers the multifaceted student supports are meant to address
- New Jersey's Abbott P-3 credential mandate, with scholarships, pay parity, and expanded higher education capacity, rapidly raised credentialed preschool teacher supply [+W] — the state-level example the report draws on
Patterns Used¶
- Mentoring and Coaching: clinical practice in feedback-rich environments, with coaches and advisors supporting candidates through preparation
