Description

A one-on-one decoding and fluency treatment delivered over 20 weeks using 10 books ordered by reading difficulty, with placement and lesson repetition/skipping adaptive to student performance. "Each Decoding/Fluency lesson consisted of six scripted components: (1) Sight Words, (2) Sounds, (3) Decodable Words, (4) Spelling, (5) Text Reading and Fluency, and (6) Sight Word Challenge." A Decoding/Fluency Placement Test of 125 items in five bands determined students' starting book. Year 2 added a seventh component, Sentence Read.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Tutors deliver scripted components; a Decoding/Fluency Placement Test determines initial book placement

Constraints

  • The study excluded the comprehension-training group and no-treatment control group, so the program was studied combined with classroom instruction, not as a standalone comparison

Target Learners

  • first-grade students at risk for reading difficulties

Learning Goals

  • decoding
  • word reading
  • fluency
