Description¶
A research intervention delivered in small groups of two to four students in daily 40-minute sessions over about 13 weeks. It was "a significantly modified version of a phonics-based remedial program" (adapted from the Wilson reading system) augmented with ESL practices, vocabulary instruction, fluency practice, and comprehension strategies. Lessons alternated on a 2-day cycle between decoding days (letter-sound review, decoding rules, word and sentence reading, text reading) and encoding days (dictation, spelling practice, text reading), with heavy emphasis on phonics, word recognition, spelling, and fluency and integrated vocabulary and comprehension strategy instruction.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Teachers trained at least 10 hours with ongoing coaching and supervision
- Small instructional groups of two to four students
- Decodable text for applying decoding skills and motivating novels plus expository text for fluency and comprehension practice
Constraints¶
- Minimal emphasis on phonological awareness instruction
- The majority of lesson time was spent on word-level instruction rather than vocabulary and comprehension, which the authors later hypothesized may have been a mismatch for these students' needs
Target Learners¶
- Middle school students (grades 6–8) with severe deficits in word reading, fluency, and comprehension
- Spanish-speaking English language learners with identified disabilities
Learning Goals¶
- Decoding and encoding (spelling)
- Word recognition and fluency
- Vocabulary development
- Comprehension strategy use
Claims¶
- Multicomponent Reading Intervention Null Effect Middle School Severe Readers [+M]
- No Significant Growth Severe Adolescent Readers Either Condition [+M]
Related Designs¶
- Weekly instructional cycle combining whole-class fluency instruction with ability-differentiated small-group practice
- Decoding/Fluency tutoring program: 20-week adaptive one-on-one intervention with six scripted lesson components
