Description¶
EETAM is a modified version of Toulmin's argumentation model in which, after students build a first argument (A0) about subject knowledge through TAM, the teacher opens a second argumentation round (A1) on a dimension of epistemological beliefs. The article states that "The argument developed in the first stage (A0) serves as data, warrant, backing or rebuttal in the new argument on epistemological beliefs (A1)", so subject-matter learning feeds explicit epistemological discussion. It was implemented over six weeks in a 7th-grade structure and properties of matter unit, covering Schommer's dimensions week by week.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Students first learn the science topic through Toulmin argumentation so that a first argument (A0) exists to be reused in the epistemological argument (A1)
- A teacher trained to initiate and lead explicit discussions on epistemological belief dimensions
Constraints¶
- Tested only in 7th-grade science (structure and properties of matter) over six weeks in one Turkish public school
Target Learners¶
- 7th grade middle school science students
Learning Goals¶
- Epistemological beliefs about the certainty, source and development of scientific knowledge
- Structure and properties of matter subject knowledge
