Description¶
The article builds its learning environment on Cobb's 3R logic (randomize-repeat-reject), extended by combining it with a simulation-based learning approach into "a 5 -step simulation -based learning model was created". The stages are: Problem (introducing real-life problems), Prediction (taking estimations for the solution), Model (creating a simulation consisting of reasonable random processes), Test (producing data from the created model), and Evaluation (querying the distribution of the data and reaching a conclusion to generalization). The model structured the four-week TinkerPlots activities in the experimental group.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities require dynamic statistical software such as TinkerPlots so learners can build simulation models and change the number of trials
Constraints¶
- Activities in the paper are about a finite sample space and discrete probability calculations; the study does not include all activities relating to probability theory
Target Learners¶
- prospective mathematics teachers in statistics/probability courses
Learning Goals¶
- inference and prediction skills in experimental probability
- understanding of randomness and variability
