Description¶
The review proposes that flipped classrooms work by reordering instructional flow: learners "review core concepts before class via videos or readings, whereas in-class time is used more often for problem solving, case discussion, and skills practice". Instructors act more as facilitators, giving real-time feedback and scaffolding based on learners' preparation and in-class performance. The review presents this as a mechanistic interpretation consistent with, but not directly tested by, the pooled effects.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learners must access preparatory materials (e.g., videos or readings) before class
- Class time must be used for discussion, practice, and application, with instructor facilitation and feedback
Constraints¶
- The mechanism is the authors' interpretation; the meta-analysis did not directly test mediating processes, and effects are context dependent given very high heterogeneity
Target Learners¶
- Undergraduate medical students
- Residents and postgraduate medical learners
Learning Goals¶
- Theoretical knowledge
- Procedural/technical skills
- Self-directed learning ability
- Case analysis/problem-solving ability
- Learner satisfaction
Claims¶
- Flipped Classroom Theoretical Knowledge Medical Education [+W]
- Flipped Classroom Procedural Skills Medical Education [+W]
