Description¶
The article adopts the educause conceptual framework of the flipped classroom as "a pedagogical strategy in which the typical lecture and homework elements of a course are reversed": students watch pre-recorded lectures before class and perform active learning activities such as exercises, projects, or discussions in class. The review restricts the definition to implementations with instructor-provided pre-class videos and a face-to-face meeting, excluding text-only pre-class reading and fully online courses.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Both pre-class activities (instructor-recorded lectures, screencasts, or similar videos) and in-class activities must be present
- A face-to-face class meeting must be included
Constraints¶
- The definition excludes the sole use of pre-class reading materials and comparisons of online courses without face-to-face meetings
Target Learners¶
- health professions students, including medical students, residents, doctors, nurses, and learners in other health care disciplines
Learning Goals¶
- improved student learning on objective course assessments compared with traditional instruction
