Description¶
A reusable lesson-level sequence in which learners repeatedly read, hear, write, and speak target multiword expressions in meaning-focused, time-pressured activities. The article's sequence "flowed from input through to practice and free production": listening with gist questions, marking pauses, phrase instruction, shadowing, dictogloss, mingle jigsaw, role-play train, decreasing-time role-play, record role-play, and free related-situation role-play. It was implemented once weekly over 6 weeks with three travel-related dialogue topics.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Activities should be meaning-focused, use familiar language, and be performed under time pressure (as the article states fluency activities require)
Constraints¶
- The article states the workshop's fluency and in-speech use gains were not statistically greater than a general English class, so implementation should be weighed against language learning goals
Target Learners¶
- low-proficiency EFL university students in Japan
Learning Goals¶
- speaking fluency
- productive knowledge and use of multiword expressions in travel-related conversational situations
Claims¶
- Fluency Workshop Increases Cued Recall Multiword Expressions [+M]
- Fluency Workshop Speech Rate Not Significantly Better Than Control [~M]
- Fluency Workshop Mwe Use In Speech Not Significant [~M]
- Learners rated phrase instruction and shadowing as the most useful fluency-workshop activities, and marking pauses as problematic for short-turn dialogue [~W]
