Description

The authors developed a website with four sections — self-plan, self-monitor, self-modify, and self-evaluate — each with stated learning objectives (e.g. "Make learning plans", "Identify the concepts learners do not understand"). Each section consisted of introduction, learning by case, exercises by case, and test, was expected to be completed in one hour, and integrated advance organizers, multimedia case studies, and exercises using concept maps, checklists, and the Creative Problem-Solving Model. Materials were also accessible from home after class.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Participants were given instructions on how to operate the website before the experiment to avoid time lost to unfamiliarity with the interface

Constraints

  • Due to the limitation of time allowed for each section, the authors were unable to integrate training on self-judgment of performance and improvement of self-reaction into the instructions

Target Learners

  • college students aged 19-22 in a private university in northern Taiwan

Learning Goals

  • self-planning, self-monitoring, self-modifying, and self-evaluating one's learning
