Description

The intervention consisted of six lessons in which Year Three students used two pre-constructed Geometer's Sketchpad activities per angle concept, one on visualizing the angle and one on identifying its properties. The article states the activities were important "for the students to visualize the angles and identify the properties of angles." The control group completed the same six activities without the software. Posttests followed each lesson pair.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • An introductory lesson familiarizing students with the Geometer's Sketchpad before instruction, plus pre-constructed activities

Constraints

  • Pilot work with Year Six pupils showed students "needed more time to get familiar with the software", so the researcher adjusted time and simplified materials for Year 3

Target Learners

  • Year Three primary students (nine years old) learning angles

Learning Goals

  • van Hiele Level 1 (visualizing and recognizing angles) and Level 2 (identifying properties of right, acute, and obtuse angles)
