Description

A short, stand-alone online intervention in which pre-service teachers read a 302-word text on learning theories, rate its difficulty, and then read "the written feedback from six fictitious other students (143 words long)" whose difficulty ratings were heterogeneous (two very easy, two very difficult, two appropriate), followed by a written reflection on their own and peers' heterogeneity in prior knowledge. Manipulation credibility was supported because participants' own difficulty ratings (Study 1: M =32.42, SD =21.28, min =1, max =85) spanned almost the entire 1-100 range. It takes about 30 minutes including measures and can be integrated into university teacher education economically.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A base learning task on which participants give difficulty ratings, plus heterogeneous simulated peer feedback and a reflection prompt

Constraints

  • The article states word length of materials across conditions was not fully standardized and suggests a homogeneous-feedback condition is needed to isolate the pure effect of heterogeneity information

Target Learners

  • pre-service teachers in university teacher education

Learning Goals

  • beliefs about the importance of responding to students' heterogeneity in prior knowledge
