Description¶
The study adopted the "Generic Problem Solving Inquiry Model developed by Hungerford (1975)" as the instructional model for the PF and PM treatment groups. The article states that "This instructional model outlines the typical steps one goes through in the scientific solution of a problem" and that it "identified seventeen sequential students' behaviours and twenty-one corresponding teacher behaviours groups into a six-stage model of problem solving". The PF group additionally received feedback-correctives focused on reinforcing students' thinking and correcting technical errors.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Trained teachers using lesson plans reflecting the instructional pattern mapped out for each treatment group
Constraints¶
- Students in the PC control group were not exposed to the problem-solving model and were taught by the conventional method involving tasks without set procedures
Target Learners¶
- SS II senior secondary chemistry students in urban and rural schools
Learning Goals¶
- Chemistry cognitive achievement and retention in separation techniques, hardness in water, cracking alkanes to produce alkenes, and fractional distillation of crude oil
