Description

A one-class pilot learning environment in a Finnish lower secondary school combining inquiry-based learning with an integrated, multidisciplinary curriculum. Students "received personal tablet computers as their primary tool for school work", containing e-books, e-notebooks, and applications for mind mapping, instant messaging, and image and video editing. Learning projects revolved around one overarching theme covered in different subjects, such as a cross-curricular water-themed project in which students collected and analysed water samples and wrote reports. Teachers had opportunities to participate in professional training courses.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Teachers need sufficient support on how to prepare for the shifted role mobile learning demands, per the article's discussion

Constraints

  • The article states implementation was in many cases far from ideal, with teachers sometimes replicating ordinary classes and hardware and software problems occurring

Target Learners

  • 7th grade students (aged 12–13) in lower secondary school

Learning Goals

  • STEM domain interest development; inquiry skills; cross-curricular learning
