Description¶
The article applies the concept of integrated learning environments (Reinmann & Mandl, 2006), which "combine elem ents from instruction-oriented and problem-oriented learning approaches in an effort to maximize their respective advantages and to minimize their disadvantages". Instruction-oriented principles included elaborative sequencing of increasing complexity and structure-emphasizing example sets; problem-oriented principles included authentic, relevant tasks and multiple perspectives to avoid inert knowledge. The learning environment operationalized this with twelve worked examples based on a real study.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Worked examples must be contextualized in authentic, relevant tasks when transferred to ill-structured domains
Constraints¶
- The article notes results can only be attributed to the combination of the described didactic methods, as the approach was not experimentally varied
Target Learners¶
- advanced university students in educational science
Learning Goals¶
- applicable knowledge for interpreting empirical results
- transfer of statistical knowledge to new problems
Claims¶
- Worked Examples Improve Near Transfer Research Methods [+M]
- Elaboration Intervention Necessary Far Transfer [+M]
