Description

The article frames the interactive whiteboard as "a technology that transmits computer screen to the whiteboard by means of a projector and that enables controlling the computer by only touching the whiteboard with a special pen." Drawing on Wood et al. (2008), the authors explain IWB effectiveness through its capacity to diversify representation: "IWB diversifies the system of representation through the use of various stimuli (images, sounds and movement) and address the needs of diverse types of learning (visual, psychomotor, and affective)." This account explains the achievement advantage found in the study.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Availability of the IWB hardware, projector, and web-based resources in classrooms

Constraints

  • Few rigorous studies exist on IWB impact on learning; conflicting evidence includes negligible effects reported by Higgins et al. (2007) and lower scores reported by Christophy and Wattson (2007)

Target Learners

  • Junior secondary school students
  • Students with diverse learning types

Learning Goals

  • Visual, psychomotor and affective learning
  • Complex concept understanding
