Description

The article describes jigsaw as a cooperative learning structure in which "students are members of two different groups, the 'home group' and the 'jigsaw group'." Students first learn an assigned portion of the material as experts in jigsaw groups with peers from other home groups, then return to home groups to teach their portion. In this study the six physics laboratory experiments defined the six expert portions, and the structure was credited with making each student responsible for teaching material to the group.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Each member must be assigned a distinct portion of the material to learn and later teach
  • Members should be informed about their responsibilities, per the authors' conclusions

Constraints

  • The authors state it is not recommended for very crowded classes due to difficulty in controlling the class

Target Learners

  • science-education teacher candidates in university physics laboratory courses

Learning Goals

  • recognition and use of physics laboratory materials
  • laboratory experiment skills
  • understanding of experiment subtopics
