Three foundational pillars of LEARN: motivation, scaffolding, and mentoring

Description

The LEARN framework rests on three foundational pillars that act as enabling conditions: 'Motivation, Scaffolding and Mentoring'. Motivation is linked to dopaminergic reward pathways and self-determination theory's autonomy, competence, and relatedness; scaffolding breaks down tasks, provides feedback, and gradually reduces support; mentoring provides social and emotional support through trust and modelling, activating brain regions involved in social cognition and emotional regulation. Together the pillars underpin engagement, adaptability, and ethical AI literacy.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Assessment tasks must be staged with mentoring, feedback cycles, and structured retrieval practice so scaffolding and mentoring can operate

Constraints

Target Learners

  • higher education students

Learning Goals

  • sustained engagement and persistence
  • independence from AI over-reliance
  • resilience and ethical modelling
