Description¶
A reusable instructional-research pattern in which a fixed list of uncommon vocabulary words is semi-randomly divided among classrooms, each class teaching its assigned words for a short intensive period (~15-20 min per day, 5 days per week, two weeks) while other classes' words serve as counterbalanced controls. Activities focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, and writing, designed to help students attend to grapheme-phoneme relationships rather than rote visual memorization. Display boards and progress trackers support engagement; the word lists are matched on unigram, bigram, and trigram frequencies and orthographic neighborhood size.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Word lists matched across classes on sublexical properties; counterbalanced assignment of words to classes; daily instruction embedded in authentic classroom routines
Constraints¶
- The sprint teaches very low-frequency words (<1 per million); the article notes the design does not allow distinguishing among candidate explanations for the brain-behavior pattern
Target Learners¶
- early readers in mixed first- and second-grade classrooms
Learning Goals¶
- acquisition of novel written vocabulary and attention to grapheme-phoneme structure
