Description

The article proposes a framework in which game-based monument education provides learners with simultaneous support from five scaffold types: cognitive, procedural, emotional, and strategic scaffolds embedded in the game, plus peer scaffolding among learners. The authors write that learners "can obtain complete and immediate learning support through the cognitive, procedural, emotional, and strategic scaffolds within the game, as well as peer scaffolds among learners", with the aims of enhancing interactivity, maintaining flow, and generating motivation. Guides role-playing historical characters act as dynamic scaffolds that observe learners and give immediate, situation-dependent assistance, while static scaffolds (buildings, observation spots, whiteboard tips) provide fixed knowledge and task structure.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Guides available to observe learner performance and provide immediate dynamic scaffolding
  • Game-embedded static scaffolds (buildings, observation spots, game space, whiteboard tips)
  • Group collaboration among learners for peer scaffolding

Constraints

  • The authors note the challenge of whether instructors can provide the same level of scaffolding at different times and the guiding-manpower cost issue

Target Learners

  • adult learners in online monument guide activities

Learning Goals

  • monument history knowledge
  • strategic planning and problem solving
  • sustained flow and motivation

Claims

  • 1946 Base Exploration Gather Town Game
