Description

The redesigned Bachelor Thesis course organized small groups to set up, conduct, and report an empirical research study for external clients across four phases — project initiation, research preparation, construction, and delivery — each producing intermediate objects (project plan, research plan, instruments, drafts) culminating in a final research article and presentation slides. Shared knowledge objects were requested as part of the envisioned problem solutions, positioning students as producers of knowledge rather than mere course-takers. Groups were formed around client-proposed topics and scaffolded to organize and manage their own projects.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • External clients presenting authentic problem situations
  • Teacher facilitation of client dialogue and as-needed supervision sessions
  • An online environment supporting document exchange and discussion

Constraints

  • Studied in a 20-week final-year undergraduate educational sciences course; findings arise from five case groups

Target Learners

  • final-year undergraduate educational science students

Learning Goals

  • integrating and applying scientific research knowledge
  • collaborative design and reporting of empirical research
