Description¶
A two-stage instructional pattern in which learners use OCW materials (instructional videos of about 30 minutes, course materials, syllabus, calendar) for self-directed pre-class study, then attend weekly 90-minute flipped sessions with small-group collaborative learning. Groups of five were mixed by prior physics knowledge, with one TA assigned to every three groups. The article states "the classroom activity chosen for this flipped classroom model was group collaborative activities, focusing on teacher-student interactions."
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Learners watch the pre-class OCW videos independently before class
- Sufficient TAs to provide guidance, with one TA per three groups
- Heterogeneous grouping based on prior knowledge scores
Constraints¶
- The scope of the study is limited to asynchronous distance learning for the pre-class materials
Target Learners¶
- freshman university students in a compulsory physics course
Learning Goals¶
- physics conceptual understanding and problem solving
- higher-order thinking through collaborative application of knowledge
Claims¶
- Flipped Classroom Higher Achievement Ocw Physics [+M]
- Interview data indicated flipped classroom learners obtained immediate help and clarified misconceptions, while conventional-group learners crammed for tests [+W]
