Description

A novel PAL paradigm in which each trial begins with 16 transient task-irrelevant tone-flash stimuli presented "briefly (30 ms) and isochronously at a rate of 5 Hz ... or 10 Hz" before a novel speech-print pair, followed by dense sampling of stimulus onset asynchronies (200–980 ms, 20 ms steps) so that frequency-dependent behavioral effects of rhythmic stimulation can be measured. Five pseudo-phones crossed with five Korean characters generated the learning stimuli, learned via feedback over 10 blocks of 80 trials. A null-stimulation control task replaced entrainment with a single salient visual stimulus.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • A unimodal familiarization phase ensuring successful recognition (> 70%) of the learning materials before associative learning.

Constraints

  • Studied with right-handed native Chinese speakers with no Korean experience; the design does not include EEG, which the authors say is needed for fine-grained temporal dynamics.

Target Learners

  • healthy adults learning novel speech-print mappings

Learning Goals

  • paired associative learning of speech sounds and written symbols
