Description

A home-school partnership pattern in which school personnel train parents to deliver structured numeracy activities at home. The intervention used "a constructivist approach and gradual release model of instruction", two 90-minute training sessions, concrete materials (counters, ten-frames, touchpoint math, triangle flashcards, card and dice games), and parents were "instructed to engage their child(ren) in numeracy development activities four days per week for approximately 10 minutes per day". Components were designed to be used in concert, not in isolation.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Parents attend two 90-minute training sessions with hands-on practice
  • Materials provided: manipulatives, weekly parent-instruction pages, four student-practice pages per week, parent-reported child assessment questionnaire
  • Minimum four weeks of at-home activity for intervention fidelity

Constraints

  • High attrition occurred even with parent-friendly design (convenient scheduling, refreshments, childcare)
  • Components designed to be used together, not in isolation

Target Learners

  • First-grade students in urban Catholic schools

Learning Goals

  • Early numeracy: counting principles, number relationships, composing and decomposing numbers, landmark numbers, computational automaticity
