Description¶
The innovative class followed a three-phase session design embedded in an English for Communication course, with twelve sessions of three hours each. As the article states, "The diagram features three phases of the innovative classes, which include both deductive (teacher-provided pragmatic norms) and inductive instruction (learners' discovery of pragmatic norms)." Phase one was explicit teaching of complaint and apology strategies, phase two used worksheets and an interview project comparing Thai and native-speaker performance, and phase three was assessment through WDCTs and roleplay.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Baseline data on the most favorable native-speaker strategies to present during explicit teaching
Constraints¶
- The design was implemented in a single EFL course at one Rajamangala University of Technology with purposively sampled students
Target Learners¶
- third and fourth year engineering students in an EFL context
Learning Goals¶
- appropriate use of complaint and apology strategies across power and distance contexts
