Description

A computer-based, linear learning environment about the ancient city Pergamon used as the study material. Participants worked through "a computer-based, linear learning environment about the ancient city Pergamon and two of its most important buildings—the temple of Athena and the temple of Demeter", including pictures of reconstructions with audio explanations in which lexical hedges expressed uncertainty values of twelve architectural elements per temple, each with a scientific justification. Four picture conditions varied the uncertainty visualization: none, stop light colors, geometric contrast, or both combined.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Audio explanations with the reconstructions had to be played in full length and could not be paused; navigation backwards was not possible

Constraints

  • Uncertainty values and their verbal scientific justifications were fictional, created for experimental reasons

Target Learners

  • Adult participants from a broad variety of disciplines without archeology, history, or architecture background

Learning Goals

  • Memory for architectural elements, uncertainty values, and their scientific justifications
