Description

Personalisation of instruction is an instructional design in which problem contexts are made meaningful by incorporating learners' familiar referents and preferences into instructional content. Miller and Kulhavy are cited defining it as "the act of using verbal modifiers and exemplars which have been lifted directly from an individual’s own repertoire of life experience". The article grounds it in constructivism, situated cognition and Bandura's social cognitive theory, viewing personalisation as a form of modelling attending to attention, retention, production and motivation, and lists seven functions including stronger encoding, concreteness, attentiveness, motivation, reduced cognitive load, intrinsic interest and confidence.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Learners must supply personal preferences and interests (via an interest inventory) that can be incorporated into the problem content
  • Instructional contexts must be transformable to contain familiar referents

Constraints

  • The article notes the strategy has been criticized for enhancing sex-stereotyped contexts that favour males
  • Effectiveness may wear off over time as novelty fades (Ross and Anand)
  • Time constraints in preparing individualised materials could reduce its use

Target Learners

  • senior secondary school year one students

Learning Goals

  • solving mathematics word problems
  • positive attitudes toward mathematics word problems
