Description

The researchers prepared five project pre-study files, one for each sub-issue of the unit, containing research questions and thought-provoking router questions. Each file opened with the research issue of the week and closed with an individual 'What I have learned?' section, with group tasks, debate questions and everyday-life connections between. Groups of 4 or 5 students worked through one file per week over 7 weeks, presented projects in the final week, and the teacher guided groups and canalized them to proper resources.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Groups of 4 or 5 students with a named group leader
  • Teacher guidance and access to resources such as the library and ICT laboratory
  • Class time allocated for completing the files

Constraints

  • The study is limited to the ratio, proportion and percentage unit in 7th grade
  • Some files needed more than one week because of content density

Target Learners

  • 7th grade secondary school mathematics students

Learning Goals

  • ratio, proportion and percentage concepts and problem solving
  • collaboration and learning-to-learn skills
