Description

Re-experiencing is a newly conceptualized generative learning activity in which a learner is recorded performing a task and then rewatchs the recording in immersive VR, shifting "from being the one carrying out a task to being a reflective observer". Building on the generative sense-making framework, it is designed to engage the visualizing mode (the replay provides visual material as an instructional scaffold) and the enacting mode (learners can move freely, watch from any angle, and mimic the replay), while reducing the extraneous load of recalling past actions. The replay pauses at mistakes and displays temporally aligned feedback on a wrist info screen.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • An immersive VR implementation that records the learner's performance and replays it in 3D with free movement and a first-person embodied perspective
  • Corrective feedback that can be temporally aligned with mistakes in the replay

Constraints

  • The article notes re-experiencing is not restricted to immersive VR lessons, but the study's implementation builds on technological features of the VR medium
  • Expected benefits rest on the affordances of agency, presence, and embodiment as theorized, not directly manipulated

Target Learners

  • high school students learning laboratory procedures

Learning Goals

  • procedural and motor skills such as pipetting
  • reflection on and improvement of one's own performance
