Description

A five-part design framework the authors propose for educational AI, moving beyond answer delivery. It holds that educational AI "should not hide answers under the guise of preventing cheating" but make answer access an entry point into reasoning; treat text and diagrams as one synchronized reasoning object; use contextual step-specific repair buttons; shift similar-problem recommendations into delayed spaced-retrieval workflows; and expose curriculum-fit signals before asking students to trust output. It emerged from the AITutor field deployment.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • AI output must be decomposable into inspectable steps with curriculum-fit signals exposed before trust is requested

Constraints

  • Evidence currently covers interaction behavior and perceived support, not measured learning gains; validated only in a 12-day deployment with 12 junior-high students in an exam-oriented Chinese context

Target Learners

  • junior-high students preparing for high-stakes exams

Learning Goals

  • mathematical reasoning inspection, local repair, and delayed retrieval
