Description

Reflective assessment is a framework in which students reflect on criteria or learning goals, generate their own feedback, and improve ongoing learning. The article states it "does not merely evaluate what students have done and point to the next predetermined step, but involves student directing their efforts to improve their ongoing learning." It is collaborative: "not everyone in the community needs to be highly metacognitive for the process to be effective." Students scaffold one another's metacognitive development through social modeling. The study deployed it with KCA to support knowledge building in low-achieving students.

Design Implications

Context

Requirements

  • Requires tools that collect data automatically and present them in a ready-for-use format
  • Requires prompt sheets or structured supports to help students make sense of assessment data

Constraints

  • Was studied in one class with an exceptionally experienced teacher; generalizability is uncertain
  • Only two of four KCA questions were used due to available instructional time

Target Learners

  • students with low academic achievement
  • secondary school students

Learning Goals

  • collaborative inquiry
  • metacognitive regulation
  • knowledge building
  • collective responsibility for community knowledge
