Description¶
A compulsory specialized discipline introduced for Regional studies students, whose duration was 292 hours, 144 of which were class hours, assessed by final test and exam. Its content integrated the history, culture and religion of the region with direct study of primary religious sources — the Quran, the Torah and the Bible in various interpretations of theologians — and mandatory visits to places of religious purpose and museum collections. Students made multimedia presentations on ethno-confessional topics as a foundation for discussions.
Design Implications¶
Context¶
Requirements¶
- Obligatory status enforced via the bond «fail the test – fail the exam – expulsion»
- Teacher emphasis on common historical roots of religions and on reasons for discrepancies in primary sources
Constraints¶
- From a legal point of view the compulsory approach meant a restriction of religious students' rights and their academic and religious freedom, compensated by non-interference in cult and ritual actions
Target Learners¶
- Regional studies students aged 17–20
Learning Goals¶
- Knowledge of history, culture and religion of the region
- Confessional tolerance
- Critical understanding of religious primary sources
